Winter Services Operatives



Norse Highways are seeking professional drivers to join our gritting teams across Norfolk to help us maintain safe passage for road users throughout the winter months when road temperatures are low.

Our delivery is focused locally with the county divided into 3 operational areas with Gritter drivers based and deployed from 7 highway depots/sub-depots. This is a great opportunity to be part of our dynamic team treating A, B and some C class roads to keep the county accessible by reducing the build-up of ice and snow on the priority network.

We are looking for the following:

  • LGV Licence Class C
  • Previous experience as a professional LGV driver
  • CPC Qualification
  • City & Guilds Winter Service Operation Certificate or be prepared to complete training funded by Norse Highways. (Training is presently 1-day Winter H&S and 0.5 to 1-day driver training/ assessment).
  • An aptitude for operating plant and machinery
  • Confident in carrying out basic vehicle checks prior to start of work
  • Available to respond and participate in gritting actions throughout the winter season on an am/pm shift pattern, working when weather conditions dictate
  • The ability to learn an allocated route (a gritting shift is typically 3.5-hours long inclusive of vehicle first use check and parking up)
  • The ability to undertake winter working hours in compliance with driving hours regulations

Our Offer:

  • £ 100 per week standby payment throughout the 26-week season. (Applicable to drivers allocated a specific route or covering a specific route for a given week. This payment is based on £10 per day Monday to Friday and £25 per day Saturday and Sunday).

The rates for winter driving are typically: 

 Hourly Rate per action (3.5 hrs)

Weekday evenings & Saturday   £16:45   £57.60

Sunday or Bank Holiday £21.94   £76.80
